Food Futures is a triad of Art, Science, and Technology that speculates on the future of our food production, consumption, and distribution models by 2050. This exhibition was inspired by the notion that humans and plants could communicate to one another through enhanced sensing capabilities, and features a live broadcasting aquaponics and hydroponics system that is monitored by sensors and cameras to relay real-time tank and health analytics. Phase 1 is the design and installation of the Hydro and Aquaponics Units. Phase 2 will be data collection and analysis. Phase 3 will be folding our findings back into the user experience for visitors.

Nature has its own language; specifically, plants use electro-chemical signals to communicate their needs. Project Florence is a speculative glimpse into our Future where both our Natural and Digital worlds could co-exist in harmony through enhanced communication. Combining Natural Language Research, Biology, Design, and Engineering… we have created the first instantiation of a plant to human interface through the power of language. “Growables” is a speculative design study, by Erin Smith, into the future of bio integrated wearable devices. The ultimate goal is to provoke conversation around this speculative future in terms of design, use, and possible implications.
